Never meant to last

Meaning and lyrics

History behind the song "Never meant to last: Rise and fall of Visby

The song is about Visby's golden age and its sudden decline. Located on Gotland, an island in the Baltic Sea, Visby was one of the largest trading cities in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages, even bigger than Stockholm at the time. The city grew rapidly and was surrounded by its impressive city wall, with magnificent stone churches that still stand as a testament to the wealth and power that once ruled the island. The harbor was bustling with life and people who came to trade here.

But the golden era was not meant to last forever. A series of disasters, a civil war, the plague and the brutal attack by the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag caused Visby to lose its importance. Soon, Lübeck took over the city's role as the leading trade hub in the region.

Today, Visby stands as a silent monument to this lost golden age. The medieval buildings, churches, and the city wall still carry memories of a prosperous era, but also of its tragic end.

Through this song, we wanted to bring the history of Visby to life, a place that was once at the center of a thriving world, but also a reminder of how quickly everything can change.

Lyrics

[Intro]

It was never meant to last

The brighter the flame, the quicker it passed.

An island bathed in gold and glass,

But even stone will crack at last.

[Verse 1]

Ships came fast and markets grew,

The island's name the world soon knew.

From distant shores the traders came,

And fire danced in Gotland's name.

[Verse 2]

The bells rang out, the streets were wide,

The sea was wealth, the wind their guide.

But under light so bold and vast,

It was never meant to last.

[Chorus]

They rose like kings from ocean stone,

But fate had plans they'd never known.

The banners faded in the blast,

It was never meant to last.

The names they carved, now lost in sand,

The silence spreads across the land.

The tide returns to take the past

It was never meant to last.

[Verse 3]

Then warships came with fire and steel,

The walls would crack, the wounds won't heal.

The blood ran red through alleys tight,

As kingdoms claimed the merchant's right.

[Verse 4]

And when the smoke began to clear,

The plague arrived and fed on fear.

No coin could buy what time surpassed

It was never meant to last.

[Chorus]

They rose like kings from ocean stone,

But fate had plans they'd never known.

The banners faded in the blast,

It was never meant to last.

The names they carved, now lost in sand,

The silence spreads across the land.

The tide returns to take the past

It was never meant to last.

[Bridge]

The age is gone, its fire dimmed,

The bells don't ring, the light's grown thin.

The churches fade in moss and glass

Still holding echoes none surpass.

[Outro]

The stones still tell the stories old,

Of kings and ships and battles bold.

Though time has turned the sails to rust

The past remains in walls and dust.
